General Information

See Use of Vertebrate Animals in Research and Teaching on our "Research" page for animal use policy, IACUC protocol instructions, Occupational Health requirements, and other material useful to UVA and non-UVA animal users.

Procedure for NON-UVA Researchers Only

The University of Virginia's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (UVA IACUC) requires MLBS to collect the material listed below from all non-UVA researchers who wish to use vertebrates in their work.

All material should be submitted directly to the MLBS office in Charlottesville. Material will be reviewed by the MLBS Director, one additional UVA IACUC member, and then submitted to the UVA IACUC for approval.

Submit #1-3 at least 60 days prior to initiation of work:
Submission of material 1 week before the UVA's IACUC monthly deadline will assure review that month - see UVA IACUC submission deadline dates.

1. A single copy of vertebrate animal care and use protocol from the PI’s parent institution, and written verification of protocol approval.  Protocol must accurately and completely address all the vertebrate work you wish to conduct at MLBS.

2. Documentation of training/experience for all animal handlers; list of trainee assignments (“handler,” “trainer,” “class listee,” etc.). This is likely already a part of your protocol.

3. Copies of all applicable permits.

Submit #4-5 any time prior to initiation of work:

4. Complete the on-line Liability Waiver form (click here or use side-bar button).
