Abstract: Competition for pollination has been asserted as a cause of floral evolution, but rarely tested. It has been suggested that the Mountain Laurel Kalmia latifolia is undergoing an local evolutionary shift to include autogamous reproduction. The cause was said to be competition with another Ericaceous shrub: Vaccinium erythrocarpum. Although pollination was limiting the reproduction of K. latifolia, and the shared pollinators exhibited differential behavior, no correlation was found between proximity / density of either species on the reproduction of K. latifolia and autogamy was not active. Both may be absent, or have extenuating factors discussed within this paper.
