Please contact the webmaster with any questions or problems with the data sets.

1.  When you download data: Please send or email the MLBS Associate Director your name and contact information, and a short notice stating your reasons for acquiring data and a description of your analysis and publication intent.

2.  Prior to Publication Submission: Individuals and institutions utilizing data from the MLBS database are requested to place the following acknowledgment in any publication, report, or electronic communication, in which these data are mentioned: "Data sets were provided by Mountain Lake Biological Station, University of Virginia."

3.  After Publication: Please send two copies of the paper, report, or article to:  Associate Director, University of Virginia, Mountain Lake Biological Station, P.O. Box 400327, Charlottesville VA 22904-4327, enagy@virginia.edu.

Facilities:

Auditorium Projection System: The Lewis Hall Auditorium seats over 100 and is equipped with a large ceiling-mounted screen and a high-intensity, high resolution cart-mounted computer projection system. The high-speed Dell Optiplex Windows 98SE projection workstation is loaded with various software and media players and is connected to the local area network and the Internet. It has CD, DVD, Zip100, and floppy disk drives. Projector control is via the workstation, or wireless remote at the front of the auditorium. Laser pointer, and traditional MLBS stick provided.

Laboratory Facilities: The Station has two laboratory buildings equipped for field biology, as well as modern molecular techniques.  The main laboratory building is a stone structure containing classrooms, an auditorium, research labs for visiting scientists, common equipment rooms, and the Station office. A newer building houses the computer lab, mage analysis lab, offices, controlled environment rooms, a small woodworking shop and a large open room to provide space for large indoor experiments.  A wide range of specialized equipment is also available (DNA and Allozyme laboratories, epiflouresence and phase contrast microscopes, image processing workstations, incubators, an autoclave, an ultra-cold freezer, electronic surveying equipment, state of-the-art GPS equipment, time lapse video, ovens, balances, as well as collecting equipment for field work).

Field Facilities:

1 160 square-foot greenhouse.
3 deer-proof exclosures

Computer Network: A high speed local area network (LAN) and domain provide access to shared resources and the Internet from all labs and offices in both laboratory buildings.

The Station maintains computer data bases including climatological data, GIS, publication lists, species lists, and station collection records.  All databases are in the process of being transferred to this web site.

Collections of insects, fish, bird skins, and small mammal skins plus an herbarium are located at the Station.

Overall Station Setting and Environment: The Mountain Lake Biological Station is a research and teaching facility located on 260 hectares (2.6 sq-km, 642 acres) in the Allegheny Mountains of southwestern Virginia, U.S.A. 37o22'32" (37.375556deg) N lat, 80o31'20" (80.522222deg) W lon. The Station is surrounded by a deciduous hardwood forest at an elevation of 1,160m (3,806ft). It was established in 1929 as a branch of the Biology Department at the University of Virginia for research and advanced training in field biology. MLBS offers a wide array of natural environments as well as two laboratories equipped with modern facilities, computers, and the logistical support necessary for a wide variety of research and teaching programs. Full living accommodations are available on site.

Our greatest asset is our scientific community.  Mountain Lake supports a unique and inspiring environment for researchers and students.  MLBS prides itself on the scholarly community of graduate students, college teachers, and university professors from many schools who live, teach, and conduct research at the Station.  The MLBS "campus" is very small, and isolated from outside distractions.  Students and researchers live and work side-by-side all day, everyday. Undergraduates interact with researchers on a first-name basis at meals in the dining hall, on the volleyball court, and on hikes and canoe trips.  Two or three seminars are offered every week at the Station when summer residents or guest scientists present their research.  Each summer a distinguished biologist is invited to the Station for a seminar and a week of formal and informal gatherings.

Many rich and diversified habitats near MLBS afford excellent opportunities for studies in terrestrial and aquatic field biology.  Mixed deciduous forests, mountain streams, successional meadows, a large natural lake, ponds, rocky ridges, sphagnum bogs, stands of red spruce, Canadian hemlock, white pine, and disturbed and virgin habitats are all among the interesting environments within walking distance of the Station.

The Station also straddles the eastern continental divide between the Gulf and Atlantic drainage basins.  These isolated watersheds have distinct aquatic faunas.  Mountain Lake itself is the only natural lake in the Southern Appalachians. Adjoining the Station property is the Jefferson National Forest (over 100,000 acres). All these areas are available for research and teaching use by the Station.
