Dave McCauley passed away October 30. Dave was a long-time Mountain Laker, colleague, and dear friend of many at the Station. He was diagnosed with stage IV glioblastoma in September 2014. Despite all treatments it continued to progress. He had been in hospital with fungal pneumonia since 10/15 mostly in ICU. He passed away peacefully with his family present.

Internationally renowned sound artist Stephen Vitiello premieres a new installation based on unique insect recordings and micro sounds of the forest captured at Mountain Lake Biological Station in Pembroke, Virginia. Using a specialized laser recording device, Vitiello collaborated with evolutionary biologist Kasey Fowler-Finn to capture the sounds of insect movement on the stems and leaves of plants.

National Geographic photographer – and University of Virginia alumnus – Ian Nichols is now working on a master’s degree inbiology at U.Va. He has spent the summer at the University’s Mountain Lake Biological Station, studying and photographing the natural world.

On Friday, Feb. 13,  Biology students, faculty, and staff gathered in celebration of Charles Darwin’s 206th Birthday, sponsored by the UVa Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Group. A poster session highlighting current evolution-related research in the department was followed by a birthday celebration complete with cake and a Darwin costume contest!

The University of Virginia’s Mountain Lake Biological Station (MLBS) in the southern Appalachians is excited to offer a limited number of fellowships to support station and residency costs for researchers to explore new projects or collect preliminary data. This is a rare opportunity to make an extended stay of up to 2 months at one of North America’s premier field stations at no cost to the researcher.  Preference will be given to individuals and projects with the potential to develop into long-term research activities at the Station.

The Ostrowski lab at the University of Houston is looking for an undergraduate research assistant to collect and ship soil samples to Houston from our field site at the Mountain Lake Biological Station (MLBS) in Pembroke, VA. Our field sites consist of approximately 100 marked sites where we collect and isolate slime molds, and we require only a small soil sample (<1 g) from each site, shipped overnight via Fedex. Most sites are on MLBS property and can be easily accessed within a short walk from the center of the station.
